Stephen Lawlor: Within the Moon, 2017, €220
Medium(s):
Stephen Lawlor has just returned from exhibiting in Japan through his work on a project based on the poetry of Yeats.
While there he was presented with a volume of the Tales of Ise (pronounced E-SAY) by the translator of the edition published by Penguin Books,
Peter McMillan. On his return to Ireland Stephen has started a new series of etchings on episodes from the Tales of Ise of which this image
Within the Moon is the first.
The Tales of Ise were composed by various authors during the Heian period in Japan which lasted for roughly 400 years from 784 to 1185.
The title reflects the sacred Shinto Shrine at Ise although only a few of the stories are located there. There is a central protagonist and herione
and not all of the affairs are successful but it is in the courtly language and the communication between the sexes that drama, sadness,
joy and beauty unfold so elegantly.
Many of the collected poems and prose making up the tales have inspired Noh plays and their reference to the landscape, wildlife and seasons of Japan
are profound, original and above all beautiful. They have become a textbook for the aesthetic of the ‘way of love’ and set the tone and influenced so many
poets and writers down through the centuries both in Japan and internationally. These include among  them James Joyce and WB Yeats.
